El Beso de la Tierra: is a multidisciplinary arts project that follows the development of the Latin America culture from its raw origins (Indigenous, European and African), through the process of miscegenation set in motion between the XV and XIX centuries, through to the establishment of its contemporary cultural identity. The project further explores the fertile grounds for local cross-pollination as a growing community of descendants of Latin America settles in Australia and undergoes a new form of miscegenetic identity.
The fundamental purpose of the project is to highlight the value of multiculturalism in establishing a solid ground upon which identity is constructed and ethical values are shaped. This will elicit a better understanding of the importance of tolerance, acceptance and inclusion as pillars of a cohesive, creative and solid society. The project also aims to strengthen the connection of the cultural voice of Latin America with the City of Melbourne, to increase access to and participation in cultural experiences to audiences of all ages and to engage participants in a journey of self-discovery by drawing attention to the essential priorities of life (freedom, acceptance, sustainable practices and enjoyment of life).
Presented over one day, the project will bring together a community of both emerging and established artists from various backgrounds, in a series of activities, including workshops, interactive performances, a multimedia exhibition and live recitals.
The planned activities are the following:
- Lenguaje Unisono Poetry and Multimedia Installation
- “Continente Mestizo” Ritual and Contemporary Dance Performance
- “ mi Palenque’s” A Musical Maroon Society in Latin America
- Cuerdas de Latino America Chamber music of acoustic strings
